Six months after Cyprus passed new legislation regulating pleasure craft movement and licensing, full implementation remains pending, spotlighted by a serious jet ski accident last weekend in Pernera. A 17-year-old driver collided with a towed inflatable boat, critically injuring a 48-year-old man and seriously injuring his 7-year-old daughter. The investigation continues under the old 1992 law due to the absence of an implementation timeline in the new law.
The new Recreational Navigation Law covers all motorised pleasure craft up to 24 metres, introduces training school requirements, regulates water sports companies, and aims to improve safety standards. However, provisions regarding jet ski rentals remain similar to the previous framework, allowing rentals without operator licenses to individuals over 18 and permitting 17-year-olds with trainee licenses to operate jet skis under supervision.
Authorities are focusing on the jet ski rental process in their investigation. Preliminary findings indicate the jet ski was rented to an 18-year-old but driven unlicensed by a 17-year-old. The injured man remains in critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital, while his daughter has stabilized at Makarios Hospital.
