A forest fire in Oikos Marathasas was brought under control almost immediately on Monday morning after a local resident used the community’s fire protection system to tackle the blaze. The fire broke out around 7 a.m. and affected a small area of low wild vegetation, authorities confirmed.
The forestry department credited the rapid containment of the fire to the resident's quick intervention along with the assistance of forestry personnel. A single forestry fire engine was deployed to the scene for support.
Investigations revealed the fire was caused when birds came into contact with exposed electricity distribution cables, sparking the initial flames. Thanks to swift action, damage was kept minimal and no injuries were reported.
