Cyprus Lifeguard Federation calls for extended summer lifeguard hours after Larnaca drowning
The Cyprus Lifeguard Federation has condemned the closure of lifeguard towers at 6pm during summer, calling it "criminal" following a recent drowning incident in Larnaca. Polys Pallikaros, the Federation's president, urged authorities to maintain lifeguard coverage from sunrise to sunset during July, August, and September to prevent such tragedies.
The call comes after a Romanian woman drowned on Saturday evening after struggling in rough seas with her two daughters, who were rescued. The incident occurred shortly after lifeguards ended their shift for the day. Police reported that one daughter remains in intensive care while the other is in a paediatric hospital.
Pallikaros highlighted that the shortage of lifeguards, aggravated by short employment contracts of just three to four months, hampers extending working hours. He advocates for lifeguard positions to be extended to at least eight months to attract more recruits. Investigations into the Larnaca drowning continue.
