The evolving security landscape in the Middle East risks diminishing Cyprus’ control over its own national security, warns Ilya Roubanis, area studies analyst at the Institute of International Relations in Athens. Discussing the recent Mecca joint defence agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, Roubanis emphasized that the pact is not a traditional military alliance but signifies growing regional polarization.
Roubanis highlighted that the agreement lacks an integrated command structure or collective defence obligations similar to NATO’s Article 5, dismissing speculation of automatic military support among signatories. Instead, he pointed to deepening defence-industrial cooperation among these countries and overlapping bilateral relationships with other regional players such as the UAE and Qatar.
For Cyprus, the primary concern lies in navigating a divided region where major powers like Israel and the UAE stand apart from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey. This polarization could constrain Cyprus’ ability to independently shape its security policies, relying instead on complex external dynamics involving neighboring states and international actors like Britain and Egypt.
