Former Menoyia Migrant Centre Repurposed for Police Custody to Ease Overcrowding
The former migrant detention centre in Menoyia will be converted into a temporary detention facility for individuals in police custody to alleviate overcrowding in existing police detention centres. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris announced the decision Monday during a meeting with police and public works officials, instructing the immediate commencement of necessary renovations.
The centre is expected to start operations by mid-September, aiming to improve detention conditions and reduce congestion in police stations. Originally used to hold foreign nationals, the Menoyia facility has been replaced by a new centre in Limnes, where migrants are now gathered before deportation.
This initiative represents a strategic move to enhance temporary detention arrangements and support the police force in managing its capacities more effectively.
