Cyprus Energy Minister Defends Solar Power Investments Amid Grid Curtailments
Cyprus Energy Minister Michalis Damianos clarified that claims labeling photovoltaic systems as loss-making are misleading and discourage investment in clean energy. Addressing concerns raised in parliament about solar energy curtailments during periods of excess supply, he explained these cuts ensure grid stability and are not intended to target any producer group. Approximately 300 gigawatt-hours of solar energy were wasted in 2025 due to grid constraints and lack of storage, with curtailments continuing into 2026.
Damianos highlighted that large solar farms and commercial producers face curtailments first, followed by smaller household systems if necessary. He also discussed the transition from net metering to net billing, designed to better reflect market conditions and fairly distribute grid costs among consumers. Despite these changes, many households still see similar financial benefits under the current regime.
To address energy storage issues, the minister announced an upcoming government grants scheme aimed at supporting businesses in installing storage solutions. The competitive electricity market, launched in October 2025, also allows flexibility for suppliers to offer more favorable energy utilization schemes in line with regulations.
