Cypriot customers boost local hospitality amid drop in tourist visits this summer

Domestic customers in Cyprus are supporting restaurants and leisure businesses this summer, compensating for a 15% to 20% decline in tourist visits compared to last year. Neophytos Thrasyvoulou, president of the Federation of Leisure Centre Owners Associations, described business at coastal and mountain destinations as "very satisfactory," noting increased activity in areas like Paphos and parts of Famagusta district.

The drop in tourist patronage is linked to international developments and budget constraints, with many visitors choosing low-cost accommodations that limit their spending on dining out. Emerging markets like Poland are becoming more important, while traditional ones such as Russia have essentially disappeared. Thrasyvoulou expressed optimism about continued growth from France, Germany, and Central Europe, as well as efforts to attract tourists from northern Europe.

Highlighting the crucial role of domestic customers as the foundation of the hospitality sector, Thrasyvoulou thanked Cypriots for their sustained support despite economic challenges. He also called for extending the tourism season to reduce the low winter period and emphasized Cyprus’s potential to become a more competitive destination through collaborative efforts and a stable regional environment.
