Cyprus Water Reserves Improve but Major Systems Still Near Safety Threshold Amid Rising Demand
Cyprus has seen a sharp improvement in dam water storage this year, with total reserves rising to 38.9%, up from about 16% at the same time in 2025. This increase, supported by higher rainfall, increased inflows, and desalination plants providing over 51 million cubic metres so far, has offered more flexibility in water management. However, the Water Development Department (WDD) warns that major systems remain precariously close to the 35% safety threshold.
Key projects such as the Southern Conveyor and Paphos Major Irrigation remain vulnerable, particularly if dry conditions persist into 2027 and 2028. The Paphos system is at risk of near-exhaustion due to rising consumption, which has outpaced initial targets. The WDD stresses that although overall storage has improved, ongoing drought cycles and increased demand require continued conservation, stricter monitoring, and the expansion of desalination infrastructure.
Desalination currently covers 70% of drinking water needs, with new mobile units expected to raise this to 76%. Yet, rising demand by around 5% annually gradually reduces desalination’s coverage. Several planned projects remain in progress or face delays, making careful water management and emergency preparedness essential for Cyprus’s long-term water security.
