Cyprus Foreign Ministry Urges Diplomatic Missions to Skip Turkish Cypriot Briefing on Cyprus Problem
The Cyprus foreign ministry has recently contacted diplomatic missions in Nicosia, urging them not to attend a briefing by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman’s undersecretary Mehmet Dana, scheduled for Wednesday. The briefing was to update diplomats on the Turkish Cypriot perspective regarding the Cyprus problem following UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit last month.
Greek Cypriot chief negotiator Menelaos Menelaou has already provided diplomats with his side’s update. Dana and Menelaou are expected to meet this week, while Erhurman and President Nikos Christodoulides plan to meet next week with a “constructive attitude” to discuss progress.
The upcoming leaders’ meeting aims to pave the way for an enlarged Cyprus problem meeting involving the two sides, guarantor powers Greece, Turkey, and the UK, and the UN. Key confidence-building measures, including the contentious opening of crossing points between the two communities, remain central to progress discussions, with both sides maintaining firm positions on agreed locations.
