Cyprus-Greece sea passenger link faces potential end without state subsidy beyond 2027
The sea passenger route connecting Cyprus and Greece is at risk of ending unless it receives continued state subsidies. Charalambos Manoli, managing director of the company operating the service, indicated that 2027 might be the last year for the route due to its inability to become commercially sustainable. The route, which operates only during the three summer months, has suffered from reduced demand, impacting its financial viability.
The sea link began operations in 2022 following approval from the European Commission and has been supported by a state subsidy initially granted for three years, which was later extended for another three years. Future subsidies, if granted, will need to consider increased fuel costs, which have further strained the service's financial outlook. Without continued government support, the passenger link may cease to operate after 2027.
