Cyprus to Make Equestrian Debut at 2026 Mediterranean Games with Alexa Stais
Cyprus will compete in equestrian sport at the Mediterranean Games for the first time, with show jumper Alexa Stais selected to represent the island at the 2026 Games in Taranto, Italy. Stais will participate with her nine-year-old mare Kantu, aiming to challenge for a medal in both the team and individual show jumping events scheduled from August 30 to September 1.
Alexa Stais, a professional rider based in Germany and one of Cyprus’s leading equestrian athletes, expressed confidence in her horse and their partnership. The Cyprus Equestrian Federation praised the participation as a significant milestone, expecting it to boost the profile of equestrian sports in Cyprus and open up further opportunities for local riders.
Originally scheduled for June, the 20th Mediterranean Games were postponed to late August and early September to avoid peak summer heat. The event gathers athletes from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea and occurs every four years. Stais’s selection marks a historic first for Cyprus in this sport at the Mediterranean Games.
