Suspected arson in Lysos after two closely linked wildfires burn seven hectares
Authorities are investigating a suspected arson attack following two separate fires that erupted within 500 metres of each other in Lysos. The first fire started around 4pm in the Potamoudes area, consuming approximately seven hectares of land before being fully controlled by 6pm. Shortly after, a second fire broke out at 6pm in the nearby Mersinia area but was quickly extinguished by firefighting teams.
The scale of the initial blaze triggered the activation of the “Icarus” protocol, mobilizing nine firefighting aircraft. In total, 57 forestry department personnel, 11 fire engines, six diggers, two tractors, and a water tanker were deployed to manage the situation. Forestry department spokesman Glafkos Kyriakou indicated that the proximity and timing of the two fires suggest a malicious act. The exact causes of the fires remain under investigation.
