Akel MP Christos Christofides raises Cyprus issue with Pope Leo XIV at Vatican

Akel MP Christos Christofides met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on August 12 to discuss the ongoing Cyprus problem and the destruction of cultural heritage in the north. During the brief encounter, Christofides presented the Pope with books on the history of Morphou and materials highlighting the cultural devastation caused by the 1974 coup and Turkish invasion.

Christofides urged the Pope to support efforts aimed at the peaceful liberation and reunification of Cyprus. He emphasized the significant dangers faced by the Republic of Cyprus, a European Union member state, due to ongoing threats to its cultural and national integrity.

The meeting followed a traditional Vatican procedure in which dignitaries, including religious and political figures, are invited to meet the Pope. Christofides, who previously visited the Vatican in 2012 with former president Demetris Christofias, stressed his confidence in the potential assistance that the Holy See could provide in addressing Cyprus's challenges.
