Makarios Drousiotis Crowdfunding Appeal Raises Over €52,800 for Legal Expenses
Journalist Makarios Drousiotis' crowdfunding campaign has successfully raised €52,874.63 to cover his legal expenses, reaching its target within 36 hours of launching. Donations came via the GoGetFunding platform, direct contributions, and €3,100 in cash. After fees, approximately €46,586.49 remains in a separate PayPal account, with further funds held in a Revolut account exclusively for the campaign. Drousiotis has pledged that all proceeds will be used solely for legal costs and subjected to an independent audit.
The campaign has attracted legal scrutiny, with the Interior Ministry referring the matter to police for examination. Legal experts have expressed doubts over the campaign's compliance with current legislation. Drousiotis faces criminal proceedings related to allegations involving a woman known as Sandy and potential personal data offences linked to his book Mafia State, which he denies, calling the Sandy case “vindictive.”
The journalists’ union has voiced concerns about potential impacts on freedom of expression. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou indicated no prosecution would follow if the campaign is found not to violate existing laws. Drousiotis remains committed to transparency and using the raised funds strictly for his personal legal defence.
