Former Cyprus Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou Criticizes Delays in Environmental Policy and Akamas Management
Former environment commissioner Antonia Theodosiou described her departure from the post as "sudden" and expressed concerns over delays in environmental policy and the management of the Akamas region. Speaking to StockWatch, she revealed she was unaware of her replacement during the recent government reshuffle and emphasized that her advisory role limited her office's ability to effect political decisions.
Theodosiou highlighted that her office received nearly 10 complaints daily about issues such as tree cutting, illegal dumping, and forest interventions, with about 90% deemed justified. She stressed that many critical environmental issues remain at an early stage or have not started, particularly noting that Akamas should be managed as a broader natural, cultural, and social area rather than merely a protected landscape.
Appointed by President Nikos Christodoulides in January 2024, Theodosiou cited the need for comprehensive action that blends environmental protection with sustainable development. She also advocated for establishing a deputy ministry for climate change and sustainable development to enhance Cyprus's environmental policy capacity. Her replacement by former Edek MP Elias Myrianthous has drawn concern from environmental organizations over the loss of expertise.
