20-year-old detained for alleged sexual abuse of 14-year-old in Nicosia
A 20-year-old man was remanded for three days by authorities in northern Cyprus as they investigate allegations of sexual abuse involving a 14-year-old child in Nicosia. The suspect, a Turkmenistan national, appeared before the court following his arrest on charges related to sexual assault of a minor under sixteen.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred in 2025 at an empty construction site near a school in Nicosia. Police launched the investigation after the child’s mother discovered incriminating WhatsApp screenshots on a shared cloud storage account. Both the suspect’s and the child’s phones were seized and are undergoing examination.
During the court hearing, the suspect admitted to the accusations in a voluntary statement, which investigators are verifying alongside additional evidence. The minor is expected to have a medical examination as part of the ongoing investigation. The suspect claimed the child was his girlfriend and expressed remorse for the situation.
