Cyprus to debut in padel at Taranto 26 Mediterranean Games with six-player team
Cyprus will make its padel debut at the upcoming Mediterranean Games ‘Taranto 26,’ the first time the sport has been included in the country's delegation. The six-member team will compete in men’s, women’s, and mixed events starting August 22. Padel, which falls under the Cyprus Tennis Federation, is one of the newest sports in the country but has gained rapid international recognition.
The Cyprus Padel Federation president, Dimitris Leontis, expressed optimism for a strong performance following the team’s previous participation in a European championship. The squad includes Sergis Kyratzis, Christopher Koutrouzas, Petros Chrysochos, Giovanna Knezevic, Maria Siopacha, and Lena Savva.
Additionally, the Cyprus Tennis Federation will field its largest-ever team at the Games with 11 athletes, highlighting the growing presence of racket sports in Cyprus. Kyratzis, a former tennis champion, conveyed gratitude for the opportunity and voiced hope for padel’s inclusion in future Olympic programs given its worldwide growth.
