Cyprus to install surveillance cameras at 800 illegal rubbish dump sites to prevent further dumping
Cyprus is set to install surveillance cameras at around 800 illegal rubbish dump sites to deter further waste disposal. This initiative follows extensive clean-up efforts over the past two years, with authorities aiming to use the cameras as a preventative and deterrent measure.
The decision was made during a meeting at the interior ministry on July 20, where officials agreed on the plan after receiving conditional approval from the Data Protection Commissioner. The approval mandates that camera placement and angles must comply with personal data protection regulations.
A tender will soon be issued for the camera specifications, but the exact locations for installation have yet to be finalized. Local councils and municipal leaders will use the surveillance system to help address the ongoing issue of illegal dumping across the island.
