Cyprus courts, including the Supreme Court and district courts, observe a recess from July 10 to September 9, during which trials generally pause but urgent matters continue to be addressed by judges. This break allows legal professionals to handle paperwork and prepare for the upcoming judicial year without disrupting critical processes.
Similar summer recess arrangements exist across Europe. For instance, Greece has specialized court divisions during the summer for urgent cases, Spain and Italy largely suspend proceedings in August except for specific cases, and Belgium closes courts from July to August with deadline postponements. Ireland, sharing a common law system with Cyprus, limits court sittings during judicial holidays but holds special sessions for urgent issues. The Court of Justice of the European Union also suspends proceedings during its summer holiday from mid-July to the end of August except for urgent cases.
Skordis emphasized that the current system in Cyprus works well and does not require changes, balancing the need for judicial rest with ongoing legal responsibilities.
