Cyprus integrates AI into tourism strategy to boost competitiveness and visitor experience

Cyprus is advancing its tourism sector by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into a new strategic plan aimed at enhancing services and competitiveness. Tourism Deputy Minister Kostas Koumis and Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides discussed the "Smart Tourism 2032" strategy, which views the island as a "Living Lab" for combining AI with traditional hospitality. The plan focuses on smart infrastructure, destination management, and empowering digitally-savvy tourists, with particular attention to small and medium-sized tourism businesses.

The initiative is part of the broader national AI strategy consultation, which will close on August 31, 2026. Koumis emphasized that AI has already begun transforming how visitors gather information, plan trips, and experience destinations. The government seeks to leverage AI to improve both Cyprus' international appeal and the overall visitor experience.

By involving tourism stakeholders in shaping the national AI framework, Cyprus aims not only to modernize its tourism operations but also to showcase its traditional strengths alongside cutting-edge technology. The strategy represents a comprehensive effort to ensure technology enhances every stage of the travel journey on the island.
