Conference highlights labour exploitation and protection of unaccompanied migrant children in Cyprus
The Step Up Stop Slavery conference in Nicosia on 30 July 2026 spotlighted labour exploitation of foreign workers in Cyprus, with a focus on vulnerable groups such as unaccompanied migrant children. Natasa Xenofontos Koudouna from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) detailed the 'Transition to Adulthood' project, which supports these children through accommodation, psychosocial aid, and integration services to prepare them for independent living.
The conference also addressed the broader, international scope of labour exploitation. Susan Kerr from the OSCE’s Human Rights Department emphasized that labour trafficking is a widespread issue across 57 participating states, with around 28 million people worldwide forced into labour. Kerr noted challenges in detection due to increasingly interconnected labour markets and highlighted that migrant workers are particularly vulnerable due to limited access to information, language barriers, social isolation, and dependence on employers.
Both speakers underlined the importance of multi-agency cooperation, involving governmental bodies, civil society, and the private sector, to strengthen protections and combat human trafficking effectively within Cyprus and beyond.
