Labour Ministry Mediates Deal to Avoid Strike at Larnaca Desalination Plant
The Labour Ministry announced on Thursday that a deal has been reached between workers and employers at the Larnaca desalination plant, averting a potential strike. The dispute centered around the renewal of the collective agreement and pay conditions. The collective agreement has now been renewed for three years, from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028.
The agreement includes a gradual reduction of weekly work hours from 40 to 38, guaranteed salary increases each year, higher hiring salaries, and increased employer contributions to the provident fund. Trade unions had previously indicated the possibility of strike action before the mediation process.
The agreement involves MN Larnaca Desalination Ltd., a joint venture between Mekorot, Israel’s national water company, and Netcom. The company, operating under a contract until 2040, produces approximately 60,000 cubic meters of desalinated water daily and is paid €0.6 per cubic meter under the terms of the contract.
