Turkish FM Hakan Fidan attacks Greece-Cyprus-Israel tripartite during Egypt visit
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan launched a sharp attack against Greece and Cyprus while visiting Egypt, aiming to convince Cairo to join the Saudi Arabia-Turkey-Pakistan alliance. During his two-day visit, Fidan criticized the Greece-Cyprus-Israel tripartite, accusing it of dividing the Eastern Mediterranean and positioning Turkey and Egypt on opposing sides.
Fidan emphasized that the Mecca Agreement alliance is not directed against any country but aims to create a cooperative framework and establish deterrence. He also warned that Israel’s refusal to implement a Gaza agreement might force Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt to take radical steps, urging the US to pressure Israel accordingly.
Though Egypt is considered a natural partner for this alliance, Cairo remains cautious about joining a bloc dominated by Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Egypt prefers to maintain its independent role, balancing relations with Israel, the US, and regional powers, and is not ready to join a strictly anti-Israel defense pact despite Israeli actions in Gaza. Fidan’s visit opens a window to restoring Turkish-Egyptian ties fractured after the 2013 ousting of former Egyptian President Morsi.
