Monk accused of attempted murder at Saint Neophytos monastery faces new trial date in Paphos
A 51-year-old monk accused of attempted murder at the Saint Neophytos monastery in Tala, Paphos, has been referred to the Paphos criminal court with a new trial date set for October 7. The monk allegedly stabbed a 53-year-old monastery employee in the throat during a dispute over occupying two cells, one previously held by his father. He also reportedly injured a 27-year-old priest in the hand.
The accused was arrested on August 7 following the incident. During the recent hearing, his defence lawyer argued that the chances of conviction are "almost non-existent" and denied any flight risk, citing his client’s respected status in the Paphos community. However, prosecutors requested that the monk remain in custody pending the court’s decision.
A decision on whether the monk will stay in custody until the trial is expected on August 18. The case continues to draw attention due to the nature of the accusations and its setting within the monastery.
