Shortly before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the 70th Engineer Battalion was ordered not to lay mines at the critical landing point of Pente Mili on the northern coast, according to newly published accounts. The battalion arrived in Kyrenia late on July 19, prepared to fortify the coast, but received direct orders from commander Stylianos Michopoulos to refrain from mining, citing the mission as a precautionary measure.
Testimonies suggest the decision was influenced by instructions from the Greek junta under dictator Dimitrios Ioannides, who reportedly wanted Turkish forces to enter Kyrenia before intervening. Despite this initial restraint, the battalion later took part in heavy fighting around Lapithos and Karavas, suffering significant losses while laying minefields in early August 1974.
