Cyprus TSO assures no power cuts as electricity demand falls and capacity remains sufficient
The Transmission System Operator (TSO) of Cyprus has assured consumers that no power cuts are expected in the coming days due to declining electricity demand and adequate generating capacity. Demand recently peaked at around 1,200 megawatts midday and 950-1,000MW at night, while production capacity remains above 1,240MW, providing enough coverage and reserve.
TSO spokesperson Hara Koussiappa stated any disruption caused by a generating unit failure would only last a few minutes during system rebalancing. This follows supply issues in July caused by high demand and unit failures. Demand is expected to fall further from August 15 as residents leave for holidays, with a reassessment planned upon their return or temperature changes.
Looking ahead, nine aging conventional units producing about 750MW will be withdrawn post-2029 due to EU environmental regulations. While supply should be adequate until 2030 through existing generators and storage projects, including a 120MW facility set for January, natural gas will be necessary afterwards to maintain capacity, according to Energy Minister Michael Damianos.
