Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister stresses need for common understanding to resolve Cyprus dispute
Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu emphasized that declarations of willingness to settle the Cyprus dispute are ineffective unless both sides first agree on the nature of the problem. Speaking on Wednesday, Ertugruloglu highlighted that while the Turkish Cypriot side is committed to a solution, the differing perceptions of what constitutes the 'problem' versus the 'solution' have hindered progress in decades of negotiations.
Ertugruloglu also criticized the UN Security Council and the European Union for their roles, claiming the former created the problem and the latter further entrenched it. He pinpointed 'status inequality' as the core issue, referencing the international recognition of the Republic of Cyprus as a state, while the Turkish Cypriot community lacks similar status. Without correcting these international oversights, he argued, an acceptable outcome remains elusive.
Ahead of scheduled meetings between negotiators and leaders set for late August, a comprehensive record of past convergences in talks is being prepared to assist all parties, including guarantor powers, in assessing willingness to advance the settlement process.
