Bipartisan US lawmakers urge prioritization of Great Sea Interconnector to enhance Eastern Mediterranean energy security
A bipartisan group of American lawmakers has called on US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the CEO of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, Ben Black, to prioritize the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. The initiative aims to connect the electricity grids of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, bolstering cooperation and energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Led by Representatives Brad Schneider and Gus Bilirakis, the lawmakers emphasized the GSI’s strategic importance for regional collaboration and its role in developing the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. They highlighted that the project would end Cyprus' energy isolation from the European electricity network, enhance Israel’s supply security, and provide a reliable, clean energy platform between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The lawmakers also linked the project to the Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act, promoting US support for cross-border infrastructure and strategic partnerships in the region. They urged the US State Department and DFC to hold a closed briefing on geopolitical challenges impacting the completion of the GSI.
