Demolition begins on long-disputed Karpasitis family building opposite Larnaca port
The Karpasitis family has finally begun demolishing their building opposite Larnaca port after 25 years of legal battles to remove unlicensed cabaret operators. The building on Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue was recently shut down by the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation due to structural risks, clearing the way for the demolition to start.
The last nightclub operating without a license was closed six years ago, after which the family appointed an engineer who deemed the building unsafe. The demolition permit was granted following a fatal building collapse in Germasogeia, prompting authorities to take swift action.
The Karpasitis family, original owners since the 1950s, plan to sell the prime waterfront plot for redevelopment. The site holds significance to Larnaca’s history, having once housed the family’s furniture factory and early bouzouki venues before becoming a nightlife hotspot and decline area in recent decades.
