Nearly 17.1% of Cyprus population at poverty risk as prices rise sharply
Almost 167,000 people in southern Cyprus, equating to 17.1% of the population, are living at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to the 2025 Household Income and Living Conditions Survey. Data revealed that 15.5% of men and 18.7% of women fall below the poverty line, defined as a household income below €27,803 annually for a family of four with two children under 14.
The rising cost of living continues to impact household budgets, with significant price disparities noted across supermarkets. The "e-kalathi" price-monitoring platform reported that between 16 and 31 July, prices for 805 products increased by an average of 10.6%, while 908 products saw price decreases averaging 11.9%.
The sharpest price increases were recorded in frozen pastries and pizzas (7.6%), fruit juices (6.6%), and chocolate (6.3%), adding financial strain to many Cypriot households already struggling due to economic pressures.
