Education Ministry Support Staff Protest for Job Recognition and Clear Employment Terms
Support staff working on various education ministry programmes protested outside the ministry on Wednesday, demanding full recognition of their service, clearer employment arrangements, and fair pay. The demonstrators highlighted that many had their years of service fragmented due to transfers between programmes, with some still excluded from indefinite employment despite legislative changes.
The protestors submitted a memorandum to the ministry's permanent secretary, Marios Panayides, who assured that the ministry is collaborating with unions and employees to resolve concerns. He confirmed recent legislation approved to convert eligible workers to indefinite contracts and stated that the ministry would act swiftly to implement these changes.
However, employees expressed frustration over inadequate income during summer months and the ambiguous status of nine-month contract workers converted to permanent status. They called for immediate clarification on employment terms to end job insecurity and ensure appropriate benefits.
