Jewish refugee killed in 1948 Cyprus detention camp identified in Israel after 78 years
Israeli authorities have identified the remains of Shlomo Haimson, a Jewish refugee shot and killed during an escape attempt from the British-run Karaolos detention camp in Cyprus in 1948. Haimson's grave was found at a cemetery in Haifa nearly eight decades after his death.
Haimson was one of many Jewish refugees detained by the British between 1946 and 1949 while attempting to reach Mandatory Palestine. After his death, he was buried in a Jewish cemetery in Cyprus, and his remains were transferred to Israel in 1970 but remained unidentified until now.
An investigation by Israeli military and defense bodies confirmed Haimson's burial site at grave number 11 in the Jewish immigrant section of the Haifa cemetery. This identification sheds light on the tragic history of Jews detained by the British during this period, many of whom were Holocaust survivors.
