Former Disy Leader Warns Closing Crossing Points Could Spark Political Issues and Boost Turkey's Claims
Former Disy leader Averof Neophytou has warned that closing crossing points between the government-controlled areas and the north could lead to significant political problems for the Republic of Cyprus. He cautioned that such a move might allow Turkey to argue in Brussels that Cyprus is restricting movement across the Green Line, potentially reigniting debates over direct trade with the north.
Neophytou recalled past efforts, notably by former president Tassos Papadopoulos, to successfully block direct trade deals considered politically and legally problematic. He stressed that closing the checkpoints now could reverse these gains and empower Turkey and the north to renew their claims. He also criticised the government for failing to advance plans for new crossings, urging President Christodoulides to break the current deadlock.
Highlighting the risks, Neophytou described calls to close crossings as a strategic mistake that could strengthen proponents of a two-state solution. He cautioned that even genuine patriotic motives could inadvertently cause national setbacks if such a decision were implemented.
