Woman loses over €2,200 in online accommodation scam in Nicosia

A 32-year-old woman was defrauded of more than €2,200 in an online accommodation scam, Nicosia police reported on Wednesday. The woman booked accommodation through an online platform on August 4 but was later contacted by a person posing as the accommodation provider. He persuaded her to cancel the original booking and reserve through another site via a link he provided. Following the link, she transferred over €2,200 to a bank account on August 11 but never received a booking confirmation.

The Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia Financial Crimes Investigation Unit is investigating the case. Authorities have urged the public to be cautious when booking accommodations online, warning against responding to suspicious messages or payment requests. Police advise verifying contact details directly with accommodation providers and avoiding payments through unsolicited links. Those who enter bank card details via suspicious links should contact their bank immediately to cancel the card.
