Cyprus education ministry to install cold water dispensers in all public schools by 2030
The Cyprus Ministry of Education has launched a nationwide project to install cold water dispensers in all public schools, aiming to cover over 800 schools by 2030. The initiative began last year with a tender for 25 schools, a process that will continue with an additional 25 schools selected for the 2026-2027 school year. The ministry has allocated an annual budget of €130,000 to support this ongoing effort.
Selection of schools for the second phase will involve collaboration with school boards to address specific needs. School boards also bear responsibility for monitoring water quality and temperature. This project is part of the ministry's broader National Strategy for Education and Green Transition 2030, which focuses on creating safe, climate-resilient schools.
Complementing the water dispenser campaign, the ministry is providing reusable water bottles to all students to encourage environmental responsibility and reduce single-use plastic waste. The cold water dispensers have also been installed in certain schools by local school boards and parents’ associations, following strict health and safety standards approved by the ministry.
