Occupational therapists demand clarity on changes to Gesy integration plans

The Occupational Therapists’ Association has urged the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) and the health ministry to clarify recent changes to plans for integrating occupational therapy into the general health scheme (Gesy). The association claims that "parallel arrangements" and alterations to key parts of the proposal were made without prior notification, complicating the ongoing consultation process.

Association president Despina Kaimi emphasized that consultation cannot proceed effectively if foundational data are changed without official notice. The association has been actively engaged in discussions spanning several years, submitting a detailed proposal and a counterproposal in response to HIO requests. However, newly introduced elements in the closing stages have cast doubt on the consistency and transparency of the consultation.

The association also stressed the importance of universal access to occupational therapy services under Gesy, advocating for eligibility based on documented therapeutic need and standardized clinical criteria. It called for equal treatment of all professionals within the regulated occupation to ensure fairness, insisting the profession seeks no preferential treatment but consistent application of rules.
