Remedica drug recall prompts prescription changes and supply challenges in Cyprus
Doctors in Cyprus's General Health System (GHS/GESY) are urgently revising patient prescriptions following a voluntary mass recall of pharmaceutical products by Remedica. The recall has complicated access to medicines, as many doctors are on summer holidays and several pharmacies have closed ahead of the August 15 public holiday.
For some recalled drugs, equivalent medicines already listed in GESY’s pharmaceutical catalogue can serve as substitutes. The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) is working to enable pharmacists to make these substitutions directly without waiting for new prescriptions. However, for medicines without alternatives, doctors must alter treatment plans until HIO secures new stock from other suppliers. One such product's equivalent has reportedly been procured.
The recall, initiated by the manufacturer as a precaution, poses logistical challenges, especially given the holiday period limiting healthcare provider availability. While there is no safety risk to patients currently using the recalled medicines, replacements are necessary to maintain uninterrupted pharmaceutical coverage. Hospitals have been briefed, and the HIO is expected to issue detailed guidelines for handling the recall imminently.
