Central Bank of Cyprus links stronger internal audit with boosting public trust in financial authorities

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) has emphasized that enhanced internal audit standards can significantly strengthen public trust in central banks and financial supervisory authorities. In an analysis by CBC's internal audit director Constantinos Trikoupis, newly introduced international requirements, known as the Topical Requirements by the Institute of Internal Auditors, are highlighted as crucial for providing independent assurance on governance, risk management, and control systems.

These requirements, which cover critical topics like cybersecurity, third-party risk, and organizational resilience, came into force in stages from 2026 to 2027 and aim to improve audit consistency across European financial institutions. Trikoupis warned, however, that the growing number of mandatory guidelines could challenge audit functions, potentially straining resources and encouraging a checklist approach over professional judgment.

Ultimately, Trikoupis argues that these evolving audit standards play a vital role not just in regulatory compliance but in enhancing transparency and governance, crucial for maintaining public confidence in financial institutions operating within Europe’s interconnected system.
