Paphos Municipality launches new daily sea pollution monitoring and response programme
Paphos Municipality has initiated a pioneering programme to prevent, detect, and respond swiftly to pollution incidents at sea along the Paphos and Yeroskipou coastal areas. This innovative initiative involves daily patrols by specialised personnel on properly crewed vessels, operating every day in morning and afternoon shifts over a four-month period.
The contractor, funded by a 50,000-euro contract supported by the Cyprus Ports Authority and the two municipalities, will focus on early detection and immediate action against oil spills, solid waste, debris, and sewage pollution. Upon detection, containment and clean-up efforts will be promptly executed using specialised anti-pollution equipment.
The programme aims to enhance protection of swimming zones and the wider marine ecosystem, reduce response times to pollution, and maintain high environmental standards along the coastal front. Continuous coordination with relevant authorities and thorough incident documentation will ensure effective monitoring, reflecting Paphos Municipality’s commitment to safeguarding both residents’ quality of life and the many beachgoers who visit the area.
