Cyprus Economic Indicator Shows Milder Decline in July 2026, Easing Negative Trends
Cyprus's Composite Leading Economic Indicator (CLI) recorded a smaller annual decline of 0.43% in July 2026, a significant improvement from the 0.69% drop in June and 1.34% in May, suggesting that adverse economic trends are beginning to ease. Despite this, the Cyprus economy still faces short-term pressures from geopolitical and external factors.
The decline in the CLI was influenced by lower economic sentiment, rising Brent crude oil prices, and reduced tourist arrivals compared to the previous year. However, positive contributions from property sales, retail trade, and electricity production helped limit the overall fall in the index.
The CLI, produced by the Economics Research Centre of the University of Cyprus, serves as an early warning tool for shifts in economic activity by tracking variables like crude oil prices, economic sentiment, property transactions, and electricity production. The July estimate incorporated a combination of weekly and monthly data, adjusted for pandemic-related effects, further enhancing the understanding of Cyprus's economic trajectory.
