Technician injured in sharp instrument attack at Monastery of Saint Neophytos recovering well
A technician at the Monastery of Saint Neophytos who was seriously injured last Friday by a sharp instrument is now recovering satisfactorily. The attack occurred when a monk, who was reportedly targeting the monastery’s Abbot Leontios, suddenly struck the maintenance worker in the neck with a box cutter. Doctors said the wound narrowly missed the carotid artery.
A 27-year-old novice monk was also involved in trying to protect the Abbot during the incident but was not seriously injured and was discharged from the emergency department the same day. The troubled monk who carried out the attack had reportedly been asked to surrender keys due to alleged insubordination.
Following his arrest, the suspect revealed where the weapon was hidden. He was held by the District Court for six days as the investigation continues, with around 35 witness statements still to be collected. The monastery remains operational and a tonsure ceremony for the novice monk is scheduled for August 16.
