New Quarry Approved Near Androlykou with Strict Environmental Safeguards
The environment commissioner has approved a new quarry outside the existing Androlykou zone, close to the Akamas Peninsula protected area, with stringent environmental conditions. The quarry, which will cover nearly 50,000 square meters and extract 900,000 cubic meters of limestone over 2.5 to 3 years, aims to meet aggregate demand in the Paphos district. Commissioner Elias Myrianthous emphasized balancing regional development with environmental protection during discussions with Polis mayor Yiotis Papachristofi.
The project has faced opposition from environmental groups concerned about habitat loss, impact on endemic species, and birds such as the European Roller. The environmental authority's assessment indicated 69% of the area is natural vegetation and limestone formations, but concluded the quarry's effects would be mainly local and temporary if strict conditions are followed. Measures include demarcating and protecting vulnerable Cyprus orchids, seasonal restrictions on blasting, dust control, noise reduction, restoration efforts, and limiting heavy vehicle movements at night.
Mayor Papachristofi and the municipality support the quarry alongside other infrastructure projects, aiming to foster economic development while preserving Polis Chrysochous's unique natural environment. The commissioner highlighted the goal of making Polis a renowned ecological and developmental model for Cyprus and Europe.
