Cyprus struggles to fill seasonal lifeguard vacancies, largest gaps in Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca
The Cyprus Interior Ministry has reported ongoing difficulties in filling vacant lifeguard positions, particularly those limited to three and four-month contracts. While all positions in Nicosia are currently filled, significant vacancies persist in Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca. Currently, there are 107 permanent lifeguard positions, with the remainder varying in contract lengths from three to eleven months.
The three-month contracts are primarily filled by students or individuals seeking summer employment, but filling these short-term roles remains challenging. The ministry is exploring options to address these recruitment issues, acknowledging the seasonal nature of lifeguard employment complicates staffing.
Polis Pallikaros, president of the Cyprus Lifeguard Federation, has opposed reducing staff to cope with shortages, emphasizing that doing so would violate international safety standards. He advocates for increasing permanent or long-term positions, particularly in high-need areas such as Limassol and Paphos, to ensure adequate beach safety and rescue operations.
