Israel receives INS Drakon, largest German-built submarine to boost naval fleet
Israel has taken delivery of the INS Drakon, the sixth and final submarine in its Dolphin II series, marking a significant expansion of its naval capabilities. Built by German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the vessel is valued at approximately €550 million and was delivered early at the company’s Kiel facilities. Originally scheduled for 2025, the Drakon arrived ahead of time, underscoring its strategic importance.
The INS Drakon measures over 70 meters in length and displaces more than 2,000 tonnes, making it the largest submarine built in Germany since World War II. This new class of submarine was built specifically for the Israeli Navy as part of a €3 billion agreement signed in 2022, which includes the construction of three additional Dakar class submarines. The German government is expected to subsidize around 20% of the total cost.
Named in memory of the INS Dakar, which tragically sank near Cyprus in 1968, the Drakon underscores Israel’s commitment to enhancing its maritime defense capabilities. The Israeli Navy views its submarine fleet as a crucial component of its strategic defense assets.
