Cyprus and Bahrain aim to deepen defence, shipping, and investment ties
Cyprus and Bahrain are working to expand cooperation in defence, shipping, and investment as Nicosia seeks to strengthen its role as a bridge between the EU and the Gulf, announced Ambassador Andreas Eliades. The move follows President Nikos Christodoulides’ official visit to Bahrain and the opening of the Cypriot embassy in Manama, which led to nine agreements covering defence, education, culture, and tourism.
The ambassador highlighted the importance of closer coordination in regional security amid tensions in the Gulf, citing Iran’s attacks on Bahrain and other GCC countries. Cyprus actively supported consultations between EU member states and regional partners during its EU council presidency. Eliades emphasized maritime security and freedom of navigation as strategic priorities.
Economic cooperation is expected to focus on financial services, fintech, technology, logistics, and tourism. Cyprus offers Bahraini companies access to the European single market, while Bahrain provides a base for Cypriot businesses in Gulf markets. Eliades described the new embassy as marking a "new chapter" in bilateral relations, calling the future "very promising."
