Larnaca dog beach access restricted by barriers sparks objections from owners and volunteers
Dog owners and volunteers in Larnaca have raised concerns over newly installed safety barriers restricting vehicle access to Spyros Beach, a dog-friendly area near Larnaca airport. The Larnaca District Administration installed rocks and iron barriers to block vehicles after identifying caravans on the Natura protected beach, citing environmental preservation and safety issues. However, complaints highlight that these barriers have obstructed access for dogs with mobility challenges, elderly visitors, and disabled people, forcing them to use a narrow, stony path.
Volunteer Christina Agapiou emphasized the need for a designated area permitting limited vehicle access, warning that current conditions pose safety risks and hinder vulnerable visitors from reaching the beach. She highlighted the lack of consultation with beach users and expressed concern over the impact of the restrictions during hot weather when walking on stones could cause heatstroke for dogs.
In response, Larnaca District Officer Odysseas Hadjistefanou stated that the municipality plans to construct a wooden ramp to improve accessibility for people and dogs with mobility difficulties, aiming to balance environmental protection with public access needs.
