Isotita prison union challenges dismissal of official Giorgos Maltezos through legal and parliamentary actions
The Isotita prison union is taking action against the dismissal of Giorgos Maltezos, an official of its Prison Officers’ Branch, by preparing an application to the Labour Disputes Court and engaging in a parliamentary discussion. The union argues that Maltezos’s dismissal by the Minister of Justice and Public Order was unlawful, citing lack of opportunity for Maltezos to be heard. The union may also hold a protest outside parliament during the parliamentary discussion scheduled by AKEL.
Despite public criticism of prison conditions and Maltezos's dismissal, the union has avoided extreme measures like strikes or protests at the ministry. Instead, it employed Maltezos on a salaried basis within Isotita and promoted him to chair of the Prison Officers’ Branch. The Justice Minister stated that union rights are respected but emphasized that operational decisions remain with the security forces’ administration.
Separately, the Public Service Commission is expected to appoint a new prison director next month following the resignation of Anna Aristotelous from the post.
