Cyprus to Pilot New Applied Learning Stream 5b in Six Lyceums from September
Cyprus’s Education Ministry will launch a pilot educational stream called 5b at six lyceums starting this September. Designed under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, stream 5b focuses on practical knowledge and skills tailored to meet current job market demands. The pilot schools include Idaliou, Laniteio, Livadion, Lefkaron, Paralimniou, and Archbishop Makarios III A’ Lyceum in Paphos.
Stream 5b is a specialized path within the Commerce and Services stream, aimed primarily at students who plan to enter the workforce immediately after graduation, those preferring applied learning, and pupils with migrant backgrounds. The curriculum includes twelve new courses such as Office Management, Applied Informatics, Marketing, Life and Health Education, and Green Transition. These courses were developed based on workforce data identifying high-demand professions in Cyprus and the EU.
The programme also supports continued education options and includes targeted activities to connect learning with real-world work experience. Teachers across Cyprus have already undergone training for the new subjects, ensuring schools are prepared for the gradual implementation and ongoing evaluation of this initiative to strengthen youth employment prospects and adapt education to evolving economic needs.
