House Education Committee to Probe Dysfunction at Deputy Ministry of Culture Amid Project Delays

The House Education and Culture Committee decided to separately examine reported dysfunction at the Deputy Ministry of Culture following accusations by AKEL MP Christos Christofides of the Director General overstepping duties and intimidating staff. The committee plans to recall those involved to parliament as tensions have led to work stoppages and protests by artists.

The session, attended by new Deputy Minister Clea Papaellina, also discussed delays in the new Cyprus Archaeological Museum, now expected to be fully operational by 2030, and challenges in securing funding for a new Cyprus Library building. Concerns were raised about possible premature inauguration of the museum ahead of presidential elections and the amphitheatre’s uncertain status.

Papaellina described discussions as productive and expressed confidence in reaching solutions. Meanwhile, there are calls for fast-tracking the long-awaited bill on the status of artists and increasing the ministry’s budget to better support the cultural sector, with upcoming projects like Larnaca 2030 seen as key opportunities to boost the island’s cultural profile.
