Cyprus government rejects citizenship for 'mixed marriage' children as confidence-building measure
The Cypriot government has ruled out awarding citizenship to children born to one Turkish Cypriot parent and one third-country national as a confidence-building measure. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized that citizenship applications for these 'mixed marriage' children continue to be examined based on established legal criteria, highlighting the issue's connection to European Union status.
Letymbiotis also addressed other matters discussed by the National Council, including crossing points, mine clearance, sports cooperation, and joint disaster response. While the Greek Cypriot side has accepted a UN compromise proposal on crossing points, the Turkish Cypriot side has yet to do so. Proposals on mine clearance remain unaddressed by the Turkish Cypriots, and although Greek Cypriots support establishing a bicommunal natural disaster technical committee, Turkish Cypriot reservations persist.
Stressing that the Greek Cypriot position is consistent and steadfast, Letymbiotis warned that stagnation represents an attempt to maintain the status quo, which the government opposes. He reiterated the commitment to resolving the Cyprus problem before the end of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' term, while recognizing the importance of abiding by mandates from UN Security Council resolutions.
